Electric Discharge Machines Electric-discharge machining (EDM) sometimes called die sinking and spark machining is a procedure that molds workpieces to specific shapes by using electrical sparks. Through EDM the current discharge occurs between two electrodes and the process removes a section of an object. The space between the electrodes gets smaller and the electric field gets more powerful and therefore more powerful than the dielectric. This allows current to flow between the electrodes. Each electrode is able to remove a portion of the workpiece. Subtypes of EDM include: Wire EDM: Wire EDM makes use of spark erosion to eliminate portions from an electronically conductive material. Companies also use water jet cutters in applications that require precise cuts in materials due to the fact that the absence of heat prevents any change in the materials' properties that may result from cutting of metal.
